It’s true that you can’t learn a language without learning the words that make it up, but amassing a huge vocabulary shouldn’t be your main goal—the difference between 1,000 words and 5,000 is a small one if those extra 4,000 are just different versions of the first thousand, if they’re words you’ll rarely get to use, or if you don’t really know how to use them.

If you write nonfiction—especially the self-help variety—your book should include an Introduction, not a Preface. This is assuming you write for a popular audience. (If you write for an academic or technical audience, then a Preface is more appropriate than an Introduction, or you could include both).

Too many words are a warning sign that the author does not know how to write for the age group and that the book has not been edited seriously enough. First time authors need to do everything possible to ensure their book gets a chance. Be professional and not emotional. Authors who think that their story is so good that a few extra hundred words won’t matter will find their manuscript on.
It needs to be as long as necessary to make sure you’re telling a good story. Maybe that means you only need to use a dozen words. Or maybe you need to use 40,000 words to create a novella that some might not consider to be a short story. Either way, let others determine how your story is classified.
